The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans is currently seeking volunteers and you can participate in a number of ways.

MSHV Volunteer Opportunities

  1. On-Call House Manager: This person would fill in on an as needed basis to cover one of the 3 shifts at MSHV or a portion of a shift. The shift schedule is 1st shift 7:45am – 4:00pm, 2nd shift 3:45pm – 12:00am, and 3rd shift is 11:45pm -8:00am. The time commitment is 2 to 8 hours and usually planned at least 24 hours in advanced. Duties include answer the phone, maintain the house, and assist residents. Interested individuals can have their name added to the volunteer list by clicking here .
     
  2. Volunteer Driver: This person would drive residents to and/or from appointments. Most of the driving needs are scheduled on Friday for the following week. The time commitment varies depending on destination. Interested individuals can have their name added to the volunteer list by clicking here .
     
  3. Monthly Dinner: This person would prepare dinner at MSHV for the five residents once a month and have dinner with the residents and staff person. The time commitment is approximately 3-5 hours. Interested individuals can have their name added to the volunteer list by clicking here .
     
  4. Sponsor a Veteran: This person would help on a regular basis or situational basis as desired to help a veteran obtain needed items such as clothing, interview clothes, work clothes, items needed for employment, or shoes. Sponsoring a veteran involves taking the veteran out for an activity such as the movies, for a cup of coffee, shopping, dinner, or special events. A sponsor is another person in the veteran’s support group. The time commitment varies depending on the level of involvement desired by the volunteer.   5. Treasure Chest Program: The treasure chest is a large plastic storage bin. Once residents gain employment they put $20.00 per week into purchasing house hold items they will need once independent. Volunteers can sponsor a week(s) or month(s). Volunteers can take residents to the store to purchase items or donate gift cards towards the Treasure Chest Program. The time commitment varies depending on the level of involvement desired by the volunteer. Interested individuals can have their name added to the volunteer list by clicking here .
     
  6. Special Talents: Many volunteers use their professional employment skills at the shelter. For example a plumber who volunteers to work on the plumbing issues as they come up, a painter who is willing to paint rooms as needed.
