Transitional Housing: The Nicholas Larson Home

The Midwest Shelter’s Larson Home provides transitional housing and supportive services to U.S. Veterans of any era who meet the following criteria:

  • 180 days of active duty service
  • Greater than dishonorable military discharge
  • Diagnosis or symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance abuse/dependence or other mental health issues
  • Abstention from drugs and alcohol for 30 days (preferred)
  • Able to pass breath screening, drug test & background check
  • No convictions for sex-related crimes or history of violence or aggressive behavior

The average length of stay at the Larson Home, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is less than eight months.

Affordable Housing: The Robert Miller Home

The Midwest Shelter’s Miller Home provides apartments to low income U.S. veterans of any era, including females and disabled veterans. Veterans must meet income guidelines, have stable employment or income and agree to maintain a sober living environment.

Supportive Services for our Housing Programs

  • Psychological Treatment - Residents receive weekly individual therapy, as well as access to group therapy, to help them deal with issues of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or substance abuse.
  • Case Management - Residents receive education and legal assistance and training in living skills, financial management and communication skills.
  • Medical Treatment - Residents are able to undergo medical procedures that they are entitled to, but could not get without a permanent address or access to after-care treatment.
  • Employment Training - MSHV teaches our residents resume writing and job interview and computer skills.
  • Permanent Housing Assistance - When a resident is deemed ready to leave the shelter, the staff assists him in finding housing and provides necessities to make the transition.

Outreach And Other Services

MSHV reaches out to more than 200 homeless people each year, many of whom are veterans, through our outreach program. MSHV staff, residents and volunteers seek out homeless people in DuPage County and provide them with provide water, food, clothing, blankets, hygiene supplies and referrals. These basic needs are available to veterans in need on an appointment basis.

  • MSHV provides outpatient counseling to veterans in need of clinical services.

How Are We Doing?

  • The Shelter has been cited as the model program for transitional housing in Illinois by the VA Medical Center at Hines Hospital and by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • MSHV spends 74% of all funds directly on program services.
  • MSHV is 60% privately funded, including fundraising; 40% of funds come from state and federal grants.
  • More than 60 veterans have gone through the Larson Home since it opened in 2007.
  • The Larson Home has a 69% success rate (meaning that veterans are housed, employed and sober) upon completion of the program.
